Badwater Update

The Badwater Ultramarathon is underway. It's kind of strange tracking a running race that lasts more than one day. Badwater is providing a webcast of the runners' splits. The two leaders finished mile 90 at the same time (16:32:00). One is Ferg Hawke who took second last year (just about 8 minutes behind Dean Karnazes). The other is a newcomer to Badwater, Scott Jurek. However, he's a pretty famous ultramarathoner. He has won The Western States Endurance Run for 7 consecutive times. He also holds the course record of this 100-mile race with a time of 15:36:27.

Pamela Reed is currently in fifth place overall at mile 90 with a time of 18:55:00. She's way ahead of her nearest woman competitor, Monica Scholz, who beat her last year by almost 2hrs. At mile 72, Reed had an almost 3.5 hr lead (14:08 to 17:34).

Below lists the splits of the top 5 runners along with their total and recent paces. This is based on the Badwater Webcast splits page. The recent paces are the paces from the last leg. For example the pace for the 25 miles from mile 17 to mile 42.

I've also included splits for Frank McKinney who was profiled by the Sun-Sentinel about how he became a Badwater ultramarathoner.

Everybody has slowed down quite a bit. This will likely continue as they hit the mountains.
