Boston Marathon Stats

This morning I was able to search the Boston Marathon 2005 results database for yesterday's results. I was able to pull in the top 100 male and female times. I'll start off the stats with the basic stuff that I did for London. The results also include all the split times, so in the next few days, I'll compile stats on these.

Looking at the top 100 males and females, the average times for both showed a big improvement from last year. The temperature yesterday at Boston may not have been ideal, but it was 15°F cooler than last year. The male's average was 2:31:55 (over 6 minutes less than 2004). The female's average was 2:59:12 (over 9 minutes less than 2004). There was also a significant improvement over 2003 which had a nice marathon temperature of 50°F. The 2005 male average was almost 4 minutes less than 2003. The 2005 female average was over 3 minutes less.

Below are the details. I'll be posting more Boston Marathon 2005 stats over the next few days.

  • So the Top100 was faster, but the Top 10 was slower than last year, interesting. I wonder if that was because of the threat of high heat that they did not start faster out of the chutes?

  • It does seem a bit odd. But perhaps they did pace themselves too slowly at the start. I'll have to compare their splits to previous years.
